Safiyya Sickle Cell Foundation

Our Story

Safiyya Sickle Cell Foundation was established in June 2015 in memory of Safiyya who died after a brief sickle cell crisis on 30th May 2015. Before her demise, as a then 300 level Political Science student of Ahmadu Bello University Zaria, Safiyya had plans of starting a sickle cell foundation to raise awareness on the disease and cater for sickle cell patients who couldn’t afford the disease’s management. She intended to launch the foundation on June 19th which marks the World Sickle Cell Day every year. The program was planned and executed by her family and friends who had discussions with her concerning her plans and then seeing her hand written notes on the program which she had written before she passed away.

A Letter from the President

Safiyya Sickle Cell Foundation seeks donations from the public for Sickle Cell patient’s support. These can be in terms of medical bills, routine drugs, warm clothing, blood donations, blood donation support and sometimes educational welfare for the orphaned and less privileged ones.

Routine drugs for patients cost 500 Naira monthly for each patient while medical bills vary from case to case. Surgeries for patients with complications can cost up to hundreds of thousands and even millions in which cases public fundraising campaigns are carried out.

Blood donations are gotten for free and donors given incentives like T Shirts, pens, or notebooks and the likes. Most times further screening of donated blood like cross matching attract a cost of 5000-7000 Naira per blood unit donated; this also is provided by the foundation as this is also a challenge for most patients who need blood transfusion regularly.

Donating to the foundation, no matter how little, goes a long way in ensuring that Sickle Cell patients receive the support they need in managing the disease and its complications. You can donate to GTBANK, Safiyya Sickle Cell Foundation, Account number – 0261696528. For further enquiries, contact 08088649174 08035882465. Thank you and God bless you!
